Handout - Family Life Check-Up

When we grow up in homes that are disrupted by trauma or addiction, or when our homes are led by parents who have not dealt with their own painful stories, it impacts us. The environment we experienced as children may be unhealthy – even though we often don’t know it. It’s not uncommon for us to repeat these same patterns in our own family. After all, we lacked the modeling to create something healthier.

The Family Life Check-Up can help shine a light on family patterns that “just seem normal,” even though they aren’t. The only way to begin to make a change is to honestly assess the current reality. This material is adapted from Traits of a Healthy Family by Delores Curran (1983).
